Flash 12: Prophetic
208 words
Just Like Humans
“When the moon is eaten by the great wolf,
And the sky weeps tears of blood,
Then shall be our darkest hour,
Then shall The Hero arise.”
“Uh… what?”
Seraphiel gives Kay a long look.
“It’s an ancient prophesy,” she murmurs, eventually. “One which mortals were not meant to understand.” She sighs, shaking her head and getting to her feet. “More’s the pity.”
Kay raises her eyebrows at Seraphiel’s back as the elf disappears into the shadows beyond the fire.
“Alright, then,” she mutters, rolling her eyes.
Across the fire, she hears Alti snicker.
“I think,” Alti announces, “she likes you.”
“What?”
“You heard me,” the tracker answers, smirking. “I think she’s trying to impress you with all that prophetic stuff.”
“Really.”
“Mmhmmm,” Alti continues, cleaning her fingernails with her knife absently. “Personally,” she adds, “I think she’s just making it up.”
Kay snorts.
“Honestly?”
“Yep.” She wipes the knife on her trousers, and sheathes it deftly. “It’s an Elf Thing, I think. When in love, spout bad poetry.”
Kay chuckles.
“Sort of like humans, then?”
“Yeah, but humans don’t go all ‘you couldn’t possibly understand’ at the objects of their affections.”
Kay raises her eyebrows at that one.
“You know,” she says, “I think actually we do.”
